Draft-Drain-Refine Approach
Cambridge Coaching: https://blog.cambridgecoaching.com/the-draft-drain-refine-approach-for-personal-statements-and-other-writing

– BCG (Boston Consulting Group)’s Mantra for producing detailed analysis efficiently

Advantages:
(1) reduce writer’s block,
(2) improve your ability to write a lot quickly, and
(3) finish with your best writing

  1. Draft Stage
    • the most important rule: to get words on paper
    • how & tools:
      • to write (pen & notebook)
      • to type: force yourself to ignore any imperfections at this stage
will have time to refine later
    • To overcome writer’s block, ask basic questions
      • “Why do you want to __?”
      • “Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?”
      • Then:
        • ask follow-up questions on interesting points
        • taking notes in outline form
        • found which one is the most interesting pieces
        • use the outline as a springboard for the first draft
  2. Drain Stage
    • Read through your draft
    • Remove unnecessary words
      • If you can say the same thing in fewer words, do it.
      • Keep it simple
  3. Refine
    • Currently: have a concise draft
    • Then: style it up
    • A few principles:
      • Long sentences can often be clarified by moving things around and removing unnecessary words
        • Rephrase long sentences, especially with multiple interruptions
          • Make it much easier to read
          • move some things around
          • remove unnecessary words.
      • Flawless grammar and spelling will make your writing more enjoyable to read.
      • Do not use fancy vocabulary unless you are confident your usage is correct. If you do use a fancy word, try not to repeat it.
      • Vary your vocabulary and sentence structure, but err towards simplicity. Clearer writing is always more fun to read.
