Non-heme Iron, Eggs, Calcium Intake

The iron in scrambled eggs is non-heme iron, and calcium from milk can reduce its absorption if consumed at the same time. Let’s break it down:

  • Issue: The iron in egg yolk is also bound to a compound called phosvitin, which further reduces how much your body can absorb.

  • Calcium competes with iron (both heme and non-heme) for absorption in the intestines.

  • Drinking milk (high in calcium) together with an iron-rich meal — especially when the iron is already hard to absorb — can reduce iron absorption by 30–50%.

  • This effect is temporary, and if you space out calcium and iron intake by 1–2 hours, it’s usually fine.

Choline is a vitamin-like essential nutrient — meaning your body can produce some of it, but not enough, so you need to get the rest from food.

It’s not officially a vitamin, but it plays roles similar to the B-vitamins, particularly folate (vitamin B9).
