Healthy Comparison

Comparison is like a double-edged sword, it can either spur you forward or slice your self-esteem to shreds.

– being inspired by someone’s achievements
– can be incredibly motivating
– seeing someone you respect reaching their goals can light a fire under your ass
– can be used as a catalyst for personal growth and setting realistic goals.

– bad comparison: a recipe for misery
– focusing on what you lack rather than what you have
– social media: a distorted view that filters out struggles and amplifies successes
– you don’t see the tears, the sweat, the sacrifices—they don’t post about that.
– comparing your behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel

– jealousy, resentment, or even schadenfreude—taking pleasure in other people’s misfortunes because it makes you feel better about your situation
– prevents you from appreciating where you are right now

– solution: be mindful of when and why you’re comparing
– use comparisons to motivate and inspire
– set your own personal goals based on what’s important to you, not based on a flashy social media post
– remember, everyone is fighting their own battles, many of which you know nothing about.

– the only person you should be trying to be better than is the person you were yesterday
– ask yourself: is this making me a better, happier person?
– focus on your own journey: it’s the only one you can truly control

– comparison is the thief of joy
– it’s only natural to occasionally look at people surrounding, what they’re doing, how they’re doing it and compare yourself

– the key:
> to not let comparing yourself to others get out of hand
> to ensure that you are looking at relevant factors
> to ensure that you’re comparing yourself to others for reasonable reasons

1. Don’t Get Lost
Living authentically: aligning your life to your values and your most inner wants, needs and desires

2. Interrogate, Why You are Comparing Yourself to Others
– to discover areas for possible improvement?
– to see if you can learn from their wins and losses
– quite healthy:
> if you are able to be unemotional and strategic about your observations

healthy: “I’m going to work on not being so discouraged by setbacks.”
unhealthy: diminishing his accomplishments to make yourself feel better

3. Consider who you are comparing yourself to?

– genetics, body types or resources.
– ripe and unripe fruit

– can look for areas to learn from them
– shouldn’t put yourself up against them or feel bad about how well they’re doing

4.Ask Yourself Productive Questions
Scenario 1: Someone with a similar background and experience level is further along in their career than you are:
– Are they better or more talented than you are at this particular thing?
> spend time discovering and nurturing your own unique gifts, figuring out how to maximize them and analyzing if the company or field you’re in is the best fit for them
> get with a coach

– Have they made better decisions? For example, did they leave previous employers at strategic times while you stayed in the same company for too long?

5.Ignore those Lists
PR campaigning : a lot of people pay to be featured and publications use these lists as a cash cow
